Purposes of Church Council:
1. The Council is responsible for the general oversight of the life and activities of this congregation, especially its worship life. All decisions are made to ensure that everything is done in accordance with the Word of God, and the faith and practice of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
2. The Council taps into the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit to inspire and lead St. Mark’s into God’s future.
3. The Council monitors, guides, and supports the ministries of St. Mark’s.
4. The Council monitors and adjusts operational activities in accordance with the Constitution, By-Laws, God’s Word and good business practice in order to ensure efficient and effective management and growth of St. Mark’s ministries.

· Second Faith & Finances meeting on Sunday, July 24th to take place. Dick will be out of town so Sheri will help facilitate the meeting.
· St. Mark’s received an estate gift from the late Bob Dreesen. There is discussion on how to manage the funds wisely and effectively, balancing the day-today needs of the congregation while ensuring that the church can be a good steward over a long period of time. The Legacy Committee will make a recommendation on how to use the funds and the Council will vote on the proposal made.

· Patio Fencing: Estimate to enclose campus with decorative fencing will be $25-30k. $10k from the Latino Ministry Grant must be used by October so we can apply for the same grant for another year in order to provide a safe environment for children in the patio.

Damos la bienvenida a todos a la Iglesia Luterana de St. Mark’s, donde las personas y las familias pueden crecer en su relación con Jesús y entre sí a través de una variedad de estilos de adoración, ministeriosy servicio.
La visión ideal de Dios para St. Mark’s:

Los votos en línea se contaron automáticamente y luego, el martes 2 de febrero, los siguientes contadores se reunieron para contar las boletas de papel: Manuel Álvarez, Sandra Aguilar, Sherri Coughlin, Ann Larsen, Noemí Sicard y Chuck Cole. Debbie Lechner y Tom Larsen ayudaron a validar todas las boletas al certificar el estado de miembro y la donación de registro de 2020. Se emitieron 74 votos válidos; 38 en línea y 36 en papel, ¡una división de 50/50! Todos los candidatos fueron elegidos para sus cargos nominados con mucho más que un voto mayoritario. COVID-19: Año 2, y sin embargo… otro año increíble en St. Mark’s que destacó nuestra capacidad de compartir el amor y el perdón de Dios a través de nuestro servicio a los demás, entre nuestros compañeros miembros y amigos, a los necesitados en toda nuestra comunidad y en todo el mundo a través de los ministerios de ELCA, todo desde nuestra esquina en Hilltop y la calle I. Este año, demostramos más compromiso que nunca con nuestra misión y nuestra creencia de que Cristo es nuestro Salvador que nos llama al servicio en Su nombre.
2021 ha sido otro año lleno de acontecimientos. . . ¡quizás más agitado que cualquier otro en los últimos 15 años!
Con el nuevo ministerio de la pastora Karla en St. Mark’s, hemos logrado muchas cosas para mejorar la propiedad, mejorar el alcance a nuestros miembros y amigos, y extender nuestro ministerio a la comunidad. 2021 fue la primera vez que St. Mark’s ha tenido un Consejo 50/50: 50% miembros que hablan inglés y 50% que hablan español. ¡Este fue un paso importante para convertirnos verdaderamente en Una Congregación-Dos Idiomas, que ha sido nuestra visión desde que la Pastora Alicia y su ministerio se unieron a St. Mark’s hace 10 años!
Celebramos el 67 aniversario de St. Mark’s el domingo 7 de marzo.
Compramos un sistema de sonido portátil y tres marquesinas de sombra de cochera para garantizar una transición sin problemas a la adoración en persona en el patio al aire libre, después de 54 semanas de adoración solo remota.
Facilitamos más de dos meses (del 28 de marzo al 13 de junio) de adoración en el patio para garantizar que se siguieran los protocolos de seguridad COVID y que los miembros pudieran adorar juntos en persona.
El Consejo comenzó un enfoque de La mayordomía de “Ask, Thank, Tell” (Pide, Da gracias, Comentalo), siguiendo el estudio del libro del mismo título escrito por Charles R. Lane.
Organizamos 5 servicios bilingües exitosos, donde los miembros ahora se sientan en bancos mixtos, disminuyendo el sentido de “nosotros” y “ellos”.
Trasladamos la hora de inicio del 2º servicio y el espacio de adoración de Glory Lutheran al Nivel Inferior, lo que nos permitió comenzar una Hora de Educación Cristiana (y un desayuno ocasional) en Jacobson Hall, donde hemos estudiado el significado del Discipulado, compartido Historias de Nuestras Vidasy preparadodonaciones para los necesitados.
Recibimos una subvención de $5,000 para el Desarrollo de Tecnología del Sínodo de Pacifica para compensar el costo de la nueva computadora del santuario, micrófonos inalámbricos y equipos para transmisiones en vivo.
Iniciamos una Cena de Agradecimiento Congregacional organizada por el Consejo en agradecimiento por los muchos regalos de tiempo, talento y tesoro compartidos por nuestros miembros y amigos durante todo el año.
Más de $2,000 en $250 subsidios de Thrivent obtenidos por los miembros proporcionaron múltiples desayunos y cenas congregacionales, así como financiaron otros proyectos comunitarios.
Compramos un nuevo contrato de arrendamiento de copiadora, ahorrando a St. Mark’s alrededor de $300 al mes.
El letrero de pared retroiluminado instalado en la pared exterior sur de Jacobson Hall junto a la cruz fue una donación de Alex Sánchez de ANS Signs.
La pastora Karla y los Servicios Sociales Luteranos, con la ayuda del Banco de Alimentos de San Diego, reformatearon la distribución mensual de alimentos de Project Hand para servir de 300 a 400 automóviles / mes en un proceso de autoservicio. Este cambio aumentó significativamente el acceso a los alimentos, el número de familias atendidas y mejoró la seguridad de los trabajadores, voluntarios y miembros de la comunidad.
La pastora Karla dirigió la primera clase de nuevos miembros en más de una década.
Instalamos un nuevo letrero digital, modernizando el letrero de madera de 66 años de antigüedad ubicado en una base de monumento de concreto en la esquina de las calles Hilltop e I. Esto fue financiado por una subvención del Fondo de Dotación del Ministerio Latino del Sínodo de Pacifica.
¡Un equipo de voluntarios dedicados se aseguró de que nuestra cocina volviera a ser completamente funcional!
Continuamos refinando nuestras transmisiones EN VIVO de los servicios de adoración todos los domingos, y durante eventos adicionales por la noche o el fin de semana.
La pastora Karla fue instalada como nuestra nueva pastora establecida en su aniversario de 1 año en St. Mark’s. Su instalación se retrasó debido a las restricciones de COVID.
Recaudamos $3,225 de nuestra primera campaña anual Celebrando el amor de Dios: Ladrillo por ladrillo para la compra de un nuevo letrero de actualización (con suerte digital) para el gran letrero de St. Mark’s en Hilltop Drive. Realizaremos una segunda campaña en el verano de 2022. El Consejo aprobó fondos para comprar este letrero principal; se están revisando las ofertas y el diseño está en curso.
El Consejo aprobó un nuevo Manual del Empleado del Siglo 21, también conocido como Políza de Personal, que cubre todos los temas actuales en las regulaciones y leyes de empleo.
Reemplazamos las bombillas en ambos proyectores del santuario e instalamos un nuevo monitor de TV para el lado oeste del santuario.

Instaló una nueva caja fuerte cerca del santuario para mejorar la seguridad de las ofrendas del domingo por la mañana.
La pastora Karla renegoció nuestros acuerdos de inquilinos para 2022 para incluir un aumento del 10% para cubrir el aumento de los servicios públicos y los gastos de los empleados.
Instalamos 2 nuevas computadoras de oficina, lo que hace que el trabajo de oficina sea más fácil y rápido.
En diciembre, identificamos otro problema más grave con las conexiones de alcantarillado de hierro fundido y arcilla de 65 años de antigüedad desde el edificio del santuario hasta la calle, y estamos adquiriendo ofertas para el proyecto. Un pino tendrá que ser removido porque la tubería pasa directamente por debajo del árbol.
A medida que 2021 llega a su fin, su Consejo de la Iglesia le agradece desde el fondo de nuestros corazones por su dedicación a apoyar el crecimiento de nuestra misión; sus generosas donaciones de tiempo, talento y tesoro para promover nuestro trabajo en el nombre de Cristo y, sobre todo, su creencia y confianza en nuestro liderazgo. Hemos centrado nuestra atención en lo que significa ser un discípulo de Jesucristo. Porque tenemos una sola autoridad en la Iglesia Luterana de St. Mark’s: un Dios salvador amoroso, Jesucristo nuestro Señor.
¡Dios está haciendo grandes cosas en St. Mark’s y hemos tenido el privilegio de tener un asiento en primera fila!
Adorar
Comenzamos el año con adoración solo en línea y una variedad de experiencias de conducción, incluyendo La Posada, el Miércoles de Ceniza y la Semana Santa. ¡Incluso tuvimos una visita de nuestra ardilla de Pascua!
Nuestra primera reunión en persona fue el Domingo de Pascua, que incluyó un bautismo. ¡Siguió una línea de bautismos, uno o dos cada semana! Como con todas las cosas, crear el espacio y preparar la tecnología / sonido / etc. fue un trabajo de amor y requirió nuevos equipos especializados y mucha ayuda voluntaria.
Nuestra primera adoración bilingüe en persona se llevó a cabo el domingo de Pentecostés. Nos hemos comprometido con los servicios bilingües estacionales. Los servicios bilingües de este año incluyeron viernes Santo, Pentecostés, domingo de reforma y nuestro desfile navideño para niños. Estos son un trabajo de amor y nos ayudan a vivir nuestra visión de “Dos idiomas, una congregación”.
Siguiendo las cuidadosas pautas de Covid-19, nos mudamos cuidadosamente al santuario el 1 de agosto para nuestra gran reapertura. Todos se sintieron aliviados y agradecidos de haber vuelto. En preparación para este domingo, escribimos invitaciones y notas de agradecimiento a muchos que mantuvieron a San Marcos vivo y viable a lo largo de los años.
Hora de la Educación Cristiana
Después de mucha discusión y aportes de los miembros, decidimos enfatizar nuestra hora de Educación Cristiana. Nuestro segundo servicio (español) accedió amablemente a mover su tiempo de adoración a las 11:15, permitiéndonos 1 hora y 15 minutos para la convivencia y la educación cristiana (estudios bíblicos para adultos, escuela dominical, confirmación y una variedad de eventos de toda la congregación). Negociamos con Glory Lutheran para usar Jacobson Hall los domingos por la mañana, ya que muchos de nuestros miembros no pueden caminar fácilmente al nivel inferior del Santuario. Desde agosto, hemos tenido regularmente de 80 a 100 personas disfrutando de nuestra comunión y eventos de educación cristiana. La pastora Alicia dirige un estudio bíblico los domingos por la mañana en español en la Sala Gris sobre el mismo tema que el estudio bíblico en Jacobson Hall.
Melissa Hernández Velasco continuó la escuela dominical en línea, luego se mudó a la escuela dominical híbrida y finalmente en persona al aire libre. La confirmación para los grados 5-9 también comenzó en agosto, dirigida por mi esposo, James Jerpseth. Disfrutamos de un evento familiar todos los meses en agosto, octubre y diciembre (limpieza de la playa, fiesta en la piscina y evento de luces de Navidad). Nuestra clase de Confirmación tiene entre 5 y 10 jóvenes cada domingo, y nuestra escuela dominical tiene un promedio de 4 niños. Hemos formado un equipo de Ministerio de Niños y Jóvenes y ahora tenemos un grupo de voluntarios capacitados y verificados de antecedentes. Nos estamos preparando para dar la bienvenida a muchos más niños.
¡Hemos disfrutado mucho de muchos eventos durante nuestro tiempo de Educación Cristiana! Nuestra gran reapertura, escuchar Historias de nuestras vidas de Billy Cox, Manual Alverez, Myrna Bolin, la celebración de los 10 años de la pastora Alicia y el ministerio español en St. Mark’s, la celebración de la Primera Comunión, la creación de Bolsas de Bendición para aquellos que tienen hambre, el Día de los Veteranos y los paquetes de cuidado para militares activos, tarjetas de Navidad para nuestros confinados en casa, así como estudios bíblicos regulares para adultos.
Estudios bíblicos
Ofrecemos un estudio bíblico regular en Ingles los martes, 3 PM que analiza el próximo Evangelio. Esto está disponible en Zoom o en persona en el nivel inferior. Los estudios bíblicos también se han ofrecido los domingos por la mañana con el énfasis específico en lo que significa seguir a Jesús.
Personal / Propiedad
La Pastora Alicia Sáenz, ministra sinódicamente licenciada en St. Mark’s, es un placer trabajar con ella y la persona que considero mi pastora. Lo más tiempo que conozco a la pastora Alicia, lo más que confío y la respeto. Ella predica y vive su fe, se comunica claramente conmigo y con todos los líderes de St. Mark’s, y nos está ayudando a imaginar la visión de Dios para nuestro futuro. Estamos extremadamente bendecidos de tenerla.
Es una alegría trabajar con Jason Chase, nuestro maravilloso Director de Música. No solo fue el autor intelectual y quien dirigió el concierto de recaudación de fondos para órganos del 20 de noviembre, sino que también organizó nuestra nueva liturgia basada en la Misa Folclórica de Chicago. Somos extremadamente bendecidos de trabajar con un hombre tan talentoso y lleno de gracia.
Bobb Briggs ha trabajado diligentemente como nuestro Administrador de Propiedades durante Covid y hasta diciembre antes de renunciar debido al aumento de las demandas familiares. Además de las tareas regulares de instalación y limpieza al aire libre, supervisó la re-clave de todo el campus superior y partes del santuario. Ahora somos conscientes de todos los que tienen una llave y con qué propósito. Él y Oscar Uribe mejoraron enormemente nuestra iluminación exterior haciendo que St. Mark’s fuera mucho más seguro. Con la ayuda de Dick Bolin, Richard Roy y Dave Gerber, el triturador de basura de la cocina, el congelador, el horno y el refrigerador están en buen estado. Y todas nuestras puertas exteriores ahora tienen barridos para evitar que entren criaturas y escombros. ¡Gracias, Bobb!
Margarita Alverez es nuestra dedicada y amorosa conserje. Ella nos ha mantenido a salvo durante Covid y continuó el trabajo cada vez más desafiante de mantener nuestras instalaciones limpias y libre de alimañas. Esta no ha sido una tarea fácil, ya que nuestros eventos de compañerismo han aumentado enormemente. Nos entristece que haya tenido que renunciar por razones de salud, pero damos la bienvenida a su reemplazo, María Luisa Guzmán, cuñada de Margarita.
Sandra Aguilar, asistente administrativa, y yo comenzamos exactamente la misma semana de octubre de 2020. Ella saltó de inmediato y asumió todas las tareas de oficina para los servicios de habla inglesa y española. A medida que nos volvimos más ocupados y agregamos más actividades congregacionales, Sandra se puso a la altura de la tarea. Desafortunadamente, su otra carrera como azafata de aerolínea comenzó a exigir más de su tiempo. Renunció a su cargo en octubre. El comité de personal se reformó bajo la dirección de la presidenta del consejo, Sheri Barker, y entrevistamos a un grupo de candidatos bilingües altamente calificados. Acordamos unánimemente a Cindy Díaz. Comenzó a mediados de octubre de 2021 y nos ha deleitado con sus habilidades, amabilidad y pacifica presencia.
Melissa Hernández Velasco es nuestra maravillosa líder del Ministerio de Jóvenes y Niños. Celebró tanto su boda con Víctor Velasco como el nacimiento de su hijo, Isaac este año. ¡Qué alegría ser parte de estas celebraciones! Después de su licencia de maternidad, ha vuelto a trabajar con nosotros. El comité de personal le ha pedido a Melissa que también sirva como nuestra asistente de guardería. Melissa ya es conocida y de confianza por los padres, ella organizará los voluntarios y nos ayudará a mantenernos al día con todas las nuevas familias y niños.
Nuestra maravillosa ayuda técnica y AV, Andrew Vargas y Nathan Estrada, trabajan diligentemente con Sheri Barker y Deb Lechner para que los servicios sean grabados, cargados y editados. ¡Qué trabajo! Nos encanta trabajar con estos dos jóvenes. Son amables, talentosos, dispuestos y un activo maravilloso para esta congregación.
Campanas
Estamos muy bendecidos de tener a Lisa y Bruce Mansfield como nuevos miembros de esta congregación. Lisa asumió la valiente tarea de dirigir nuestro coro de campanas y ahora tocamos alegremente cada miércoles por la noche.
Subvenciones
Hemos aprovechado todas las oportunidades de subvención que se nos presentan, incluidas las subvenciones para mejorar la tecnología, el ministerio de habla hispana, el Compromiso Global (no es difícil cuando algunos de nuestros miembros viven en Tijuana), la Subvención Warner para el ministerio de niños, la Subvención Matthew 25 para servir a los necesitados y una larga lista de Subvenciones del Equipo de Acción Thrivent, cada una por $250, para pagar una variedad de eventos, celebraciones, oportunidades de divulgación y proyectos de servicio. ¡Gracias a todos por su ayuda! Iglesia China Glory Luterana e Iglesia CoreanaAreundaum
Disfrutamos de relaciones sanas y respetuosas con las iglesias Glory y Areundaum. Glory Luterana optó por adorar en el nivel inferior del santuario y compró sillas para este propósito. Ahora los cuatro idiomas adoran a Dios bajo el mismo techo cada domingo. Aruendaum reanudó sus clases de idioma coreano para niños los sábados por la mañana y Glory comenzó un grupo de ejercicios los viernes. Trabajamos duro para mantener una comunicación regular y estamos satisfechos con los resultados.
Servicios Sociales Luteranos
Disfrutamos de una relación sana y respetuosa tanto con LSS SC Project Hand como con Upward Bound / Talent Search. Nos asociamos con ellos siempre que sea posible. Este año trajo un gran cambio a Project Hand, la transición de obtener su despensa caminando, a la distribución mensual de alimentos manejando en automóvil. Esto fue necesario debido a la pandemia, el distanciamiento social y otras precauciones covid. Con la ayuda de su nuevo director, Mark Kuntz, el Banco de Alimentos de San Diego y las generosas donaciones de esta congregación, Project Hand pudo asegurar todo el equipo necesario para un viaje seguro. Esta distribución de alimentos es una de las más grandes del condado. Ayudas a que esto suceda y a alimentar a cientos de personas cada mes. Gracias.
Los programas LSS SC Upward Bound / Talent Search ayudan a más de 600 estudiantes de primera generación de bajos ingresos a pasar por la escuela secundaria, ingresar a la educación postsecundaria y graduarse de la educación postsecundaria. ¡Pasa y habla con Gaby o Danny (o nuestra propia Mari Lizarraga) para obtener más información!

¿Qué sigue?
Seguiremos siguiendo a Jesús. Estamos muy agradecidos por su apoyo; oración, tiempo, experiencia, apoyo financiero, resolución creativa de problemas y sus pasatiempos, habilidades y las cosas que simplemente encuentra divertidas. ¡Estos son los dones que Dios quiere y nosotros necesitamos!
Continuaremos llegando a la comunidad. Continuaremos sirviendo. Tomaremos riesgos, invitaremos y acogeremos abiertamente, y recordaremos que es Dios quien hace la salvación.
Mantenga sus ojos abiertos para oportunidades de servir a través de edificios y terrenos, escuela bíblica de vacaciones, liderando estudios bíblicos, ayudando con los ministerios de acolchado y cualquier cosa nueva que Dios nos dé para hacer. Nuestro Dios es muy capaz de guiarnos.

2021 fue un momento como ningún otro en nuestras vidas. COVID-19 continúa produciendo incertidumbre y estrés a nuestra familia, amigos y la comunidad a la que estamos llamados a servir. A estas alturas, todos nos hemos visto afectados por esta pandemia, que ha sido abrumadora para muchos. Mis oraciones y apoyo están con ustedes.
Estoy agradecida a Dios por enviar a la pastora Karla a St. Mark’s. Tenemos la bendición de tenerla, es una bendición trabajar junto a ella en el Ministerio de St. Mark’s, intencionalmente logrando que sea cada vez más una congregación en dos idiomas. Gracias a todos por trabajar junto a nosotros construyendo para el Reino de Dios. Gracias a todos ustedes por servir y cuidar de nuestra iglesia, de los demás, de los necesitados y de la Comunidad de Chula Vista durante el 2021. Durante estos tiempos difíciles de la Pandemia, ustedes continuaron fielmente con sus ofrendas, contribuyeron con donaciones, contribuyeron con sus talentos de una manera que es sobresaliente, de una manera que me hace ver al Espíritu Santo trabajando en medio de nosotros, porque solo Dios podría mover sus corazones e inspirarlos a hacer el trabajo que se necesita para lograr las metas que Dios tiene para nosotros de llevar su mensaje de salvación a todos, poniendo a los demás antes que a nosotros mismos.
Como todos ustedes saben, celebramos juntos el 10º aniversario de la congregación de St. Mark’s como Uno en dos idiomas y agradezco a los niños de la clase de confirmación, los padres, James y Luz por la maravillosa celebración dada en mi honor por estos 10 años. Les agradezco a todos por los regalos, las hermosas tarjetas y poemas que escribieron para mí. Como dije antes, si vamos a felicitar a alguien, serían ustedes, los miembros de St. Mark’s, los que deben ser felicitados por estar dispuestos a abrir sus puertas y compartir su hermosa iglesia con los hispanohablantes. Llamamos a su puerta y no solo abrieron su puerta, sino que también nos abrieron sus corazones y nos recibieron como miembros de su congregación. No hay palabras para expresar mi gratitud; es una alegría abrumadora ser parte de St. Mark’s. Gracias, gracias, gracias.
Quiero agradecerles a todos por todas sus oraciones, todas las iglesias cristianas deben orar, pero felizmente he notado cada vez más que St. Mark’s es una congregación orante. Ha sido un año increíble y estoy realmente agradecida por lo apasionado y desinteresado que han sido. Estamos agradecidos con Dios por este año, y espero con ansias otro increíble y bendecido año nuevo. En 2022, continuaremos con nuestros Ministerios y nuestra Misión ayudando de cualquier manera que podamos. Tenemos grandes desafíos por delante, pero los enfrentaremos un día a la vez. Actividades regulares
Los proyectos de corte de arbustos en nuestro estacionamiento junto a la entrada de la calle I se completaron para aumentar la limpieza y una mejor apariencia de nuestra iglesia.
Hay una comida el segundo domingo del mes después del Servicio de Adoración en español (Según lo permitido por las pautas de prevención de la pandemia). Esta comida tiene el propósito de que los miembros actuales inviten a familiares y amigos a venir como invitados para que conozcan nuestra iglesia, nuestra congregación, nuestra denominación cristiana. Esperamos que si vienen como invitados, sin ninguna presión, les guste nuestra iglesia y regresen.
Los miembros del Segundo Servicio de nuestra congregación han trabajado muy duro hablando sobre nuestra iglesia a las personas alrededor de Chula Vista y sus alrededores, así como invitando a amigos y familiares. Continuaremos con estos esfuerzos durante 2022.
Un miembro del Segundo Servicio está sirviendo activamente en el Consejo de la Iglesia y otro se unirá para 2022.
Desafíos:
La mayoría de los miembros del Ministerio español tienen dos trabajos o no tienen el privilegio de tener fines de semana libres. Por esta razón no pueden participar en la limpieza mensual y otras actividades de nuestra iglesia. Trato de organizarlos con mucha anticipación para que puedan pedir tiempo libre, si es posible, un sábado para que completemos un proyecto como cortar arbustos no deseados y también donan su tiempo y sus regalos tanto como puedan.
El mayor reto en este momento es la Pandemia ya que nos impide tener actividades con la comunidad de Chula Vista.
Próximos pasos:
Tenemos actividades planificadas para eventos de divulgación para aumentar la conciencia y las conexiones de St. Mark’s con la comunidad local, como un evento de imposición de cenizas en automóvil para el Miércoles de Ceniza y posiblemente un evento para Pascua.

Con este informe, el Comité de Auditoría presenta los resultados de su auditoría para el período que comienza el 1 de enero de 2020 y finaliza el 31 de diciembre de 2020, libros y registros financieros de la Iglesia Evangélica Luterana de St. Mark’s de Chula Vista, California, al Consejo Congregacional.
La auditoría fue realizada el sábado 23 de octubre de 2021 por un comité compuesto por los siguientes miembros: Tom Larsen y Laura Ortiz. Diane Flint-Wages auditó los Fondos del Endowment Fund.
En el examen de los ingresos y desembolsos, no se descubrieron discrepancias materiales, sin embargo, el comité tomó nota de los siguientes temas:

Desembolsos:El alcance de la auditoría consiste en revisar una muestra de los pagos realizados durante el año fiscal 2020. Los pagos se verificaron para verificar su idoneidad, los documentos de solicitud de verificación y la copia de seguridad, incluidos recibos, facturas u otra documentación.Se revisaron los pagos y todos parecían apropiados.

Fondo de Dotación Conmemorativo (Auditado por Diane Flint-Wages): El alcance de la auditoría incluyó la revisión de la actividad financiera de Dotación Conmemorativo en 2020, que incluye:
Confirmación del saldo del fondo al 31 de diciembre de 2020 de $141,131.
Hallazgo:El Comité de Legado no siempre recibe los estados de cuenta trimestrales de Thrivent que se envían por correo a la oficina de la iglesia. Se han implementado procedimientos recientes para corregir esta supervisión.
Confirmación de distribuciones para el período por un total de $5,183. La aprobación de todas las distribuciones se anotó en las actas de la reunión del Comité de Legado.
Los registros del Comité estaban completos, con la excepción de los estados de cuenta de Thrivent mencionados anteriormente, y se encontró que estaban en buen estado.
Sobre la base del trabajo de auditoría realizado, el Comité de Auditoría no encontró ninguna desviación significativa y material de las mejores prácticas de contabilidad de la iglesia. Las pruebas realizadas también encontraron, con algunas excepciones como se señala en este informe, que los controles que rigen las operaciones financieras parecen ser razonables teniendo en cuenta todos los factores, incluido el tamaño de la congregación y su presupuesto.

Según los Estatutos del Comité de Legado, esta cifra representa el 4% del saldo total de fondos disponibles en la cuenta de inversión Thrivent y la cuenta corriente al 31 de diciembre de 2021.
El comité del altar está nuevamente muy agradecido de haber servido al personal y a la congregación el año pasado. Nos reunimos el 1er martes de cada mes a las 10 am para planificar el mes.
Cada semana preparamos el área del altar. Los paramentos se ponen en el altar de acuerdo con el calendario de la iglesia. La comunión se establece tanto para los servicios como para diversas tareas de limpieza. Damos la bienvenida a cualquier persona que desee unirse a nosotros.

El programa Árbol de Ángel tuvo éxito una vez más en 2021. Meredith McCall, con la guía y gran trabajo en equipo de Dorothy Geier, coordinó el programa Árbol de Ángel este año. St. Mark’s lo convierte en un gran éxito con sus corazones cariñosos y orantes por estos niños en riesgo, sus padres encarcelados y sus cuidadores. Este año atendimos a 20 niños. Cada niño/familia recibió:

Grupo de Facebook: nuestro grupo privado de Facebook ha pasado de 312 miembros a 371 miembros este año. Usamos la página para compartir anuncios importantes, fotos de eventos y los servicios de adoración semanales. ¡Gracias por comentar, conectarse y compartir, me gusta el compañerismo en nuestra página de grupo privado! Construye un verdadero sentido de comunidad en línea.
YouTube y el sitio web – Todos nuestros servicios se cargan en YouTube y luego usando ese enlace se comparten en nuestro sitio web, llegando a los miembros de la congregación que no están en Facebook o parte del grupo de Facebook. Si ves el servicio desde YouTube, puedes activar los subtítulos que ayudan si tienes problemas para escuchar el servicio.
Adoración en línea: las vistas de Facebook de nuestros servicios dominicales en línea pasaron de un promedio de 87 visitas en el primer trimestre de 2021 a 55 cuando comenzamos a tener servicios al aire libre en la iglesia a partir de nuestro servicio de Pascua, a 32 después de mudarnos al santuario. Todavía estamos sirviendo a suficientes personas en línea que parece importante ofrecer esa opción. Si está de viaje, confinado en casa o recuperándose de una enfermedad o si vive fuera del área, es bueno saber que aún puede ver un servicio en casa en cualquier momento o volver a escuchar un sermón por segunda vez o escuchar un himno favorito nuevamente.
Cox Internet – Hemos tenido problemas continuos con nuestra conexión por cable e Internet estable desde que comenzamos nuestras transmisiones en línea. Finalmente se puso tan mal en diciembre que dejamos de ofrecer una transmisión en vivo a un servicio grabado. Los beneficios son que la grabación está libre de errores y es un placer verla. Sin embargo, estamos decepcionados de perder la comunidad en línea que ha crecido alrededor de las transmisiones y veremos si continuamos sirviendo al mismo número de personas con la grabación. Planeamos reevaluarlo a fines de enero y pedir comentarios de la congregación.
Nuestros boletines informativos por correo electrónico: hemos seguido ofreciendo boletines semanales por correo electrónico a pesar de que estamos de vuelta en la iglesia nuevamente. Tenemos lectores constantes cada semana y parece una buena herramienta para mantener informada a la congregación. Los boletines comparten oraciones y colchas de oración, comparten información sobre eventos programados en St. Mark’s, árbol de ángeles, jardinería mensual, desayuno para hombres y estudio bíblico, y para escuchar al Comité de Visión, Comité de Legado, Consejo y Pastores. ¡También hemos podido actualizar la información de contacto, realizar votaciones y encuestas y compartir música, fotos y diversión! Damos la bienvenida a las presentaciones de cualquier persona. ¡Realmente ha sido una excelente manera de mantenerse conectado como congregación!
Audiencia dedicada: hemos aumentado el número de lectores de nuestro boletín a 223. Alrededor de 130 de esos lectores abren casi todos los correos electrónicos de St. Mark’s, otros 25 abren más de la mitad de los boletines. Los comentarios que recibimos son muy positivos. Gracias a todas las personas que envían presentaciones cada semana, especialmente a la pastora Karla, Sheri Barker, Roz Nelson, Diane Wages y Cindy Díaz en la oficina. ¡Gracias a Bob Lechner, Sheri Barker y James Jerpseth por enviar fotos de interés periodístico!

Hemos tratado de empaquetar mucho en la versión impresa y hacerlas significativas.
Boletines de noticias en español – También enviamos una traducción al español del boletín por correo a los miembros del Ministerio Hispano una vez al mes. ¡Muchas gracias a Andrea, Gabby y Cindy por hacer las traducciones en 2021 y a Cindy que las copia y envía por correo! Cindy se hará cargo de la traducción en 2022.
Información de contacto – Este año estamos actualizando el programa de computadora de base de datos de la iglesia, llamado Servant Keeper, que se actualizó por última vez hace más de 10 años. Esperamos tener un impulso en toda la iglesia para actualizar la información de contacto. Hemos agregado información de contacto de emergencia a la base de datos y eso ha proporcionado una buena red de seguridad para los miembros que viven solos en varias ocasiones este año.
Nuestro sitio web – está en stmark’s chulavista.org El sitio web sigue siendo un gran lugar para leer las actas del consejo y ver un servicio de adoración o ver el informe anual. Lo más importante es cómo nuestros vecinos se enteran de nuestra iglesia y lo que ofrecemos. Pero definitivamente hay páginas que necesitan ser eliminadas y actualizadas. Presencia en línea – St. Mark’s tiene un LinkedIn y también tenemos una página pública de “información” para la iglesia en Facebook. El sitio web, YouTube, google maps, yelp, listado en la Cámara de Comercio de Chula Vista, SD Reader en línea, YellowPages.com, church.org, churchfinder.com y faithstreet.com continúan ayudando con nuestro alcance. La Políza de Distribución, según los estatutos es la siguiente:
El Comité se limita a una distribución anual del 4% del saldo del Fondo, definida por el saldo de la cuenta al 31 de diciembre del año anterior, que incluye todos los intereses, dividendos, ganancias de capital realizadas / no realizadas del año anterior. Cualquier distribución que sea más grande, puede ser aprobada por el Consejo de la Congregación.
Hay una distribución obligatoria requerida del fondo del 4% para financiar el ministerio.
Una solicitud de subvención estará disponible para las solicitudes. Los destinatarios serán determinados por el Comité de Legado.
El Comité no está limitado en su uso de la distribución para el ministerio a su congregación. El Comité puede compartir hasta el 25% de la distribución con los siguientes destinatarios: nuestro sínodo, los ministerios de la Iglesia ELCA, los ministerios relacionados con ELCA o todas las demás organizaciones benéficas no luteranas dentro del área de San Diego.
La distribución no se utilizará para el presupuesto operativo ni para los gastos de capital de la Iglesia Luterana de St. Mark’s.
El presupuesto aprobado para 2021 fue de $5,645.00, el cual se distribuyó de la siguiente manera:

Sigue siendo obvio que St. Mark’s es muy cariñoso y amigable. Antes de comenzar a reunirnos en persona para la adoración dominical, teníamos alrededor de nueve personas que llamaban y que tenían miembros específicos con los que contactar regularmente para asegurarse de que se cumplieran sus necesidades y que estuvieran bien. Nuevas amistades incluso evolucionaron. Cuando comenzamos a adorar afuera y eventualmente en el Santuario, veíamos y visitábamos a otros miembros allí. Luego, nuestro ministerio se centró más en los confinados en casa y en aquellos que encontraron más seguro adorar desde casa.
El equipo de Atención al Miembro se ha estado reuniendo mensualmente: primero por zoom en marzo, luego afuera del salón Jacobson Hall, y luego en junio nos mudamos al Nivel Inferior.

Compartimos amorosamente nuestra información de contacto durante el mes para asegurarnos de que ninguna persona confinada en casa o necesitada (muerte en familia o enfermedad o ??) haya sido excluida. Hacemos hincapié en la confidencialidad.
Discutimos formas de apoyar a nuestros contactos y también apoyarnos mutuamente. Hacemos hincapié en la necesidad de una PERSONA DE CONTACTO DE EMERGENCIA para todos. Por ejemplo, si vas al hospital o te mudas y no notificas a nadie, no podemos encontrarte y ¡¡NOS IMPORTA!! Llame a la oficina de la iglesia (619-427-5515) si aún no ha proporcionado su persona de contacto de emergencia.
Con el entrenamiento y la guía de la pastora Karla, también hemos visitado y llevado la comunión a los confinados en casa que lo desean.
Discutimos formas de apoyar a nuestra congregación: usar etiquetas con su nombre; enviar tarjetas escritas a mano para la Gran Reapertura y tarjetas de agradecimiento; primer proyecto de servicio de toda la congregación: bolsas de comida y Biblia y nota escrita a mano para repartir; Historia de nuestras vidas por los miembros; Celebración del Día de los Veteranos; antes del Domingo de Todos los Santos, invite a las familias de los honrados; con la ayuda de los niños de la Escuela Dominical y la Confirmación, enviamos tarjetas de Navidad hechas a mano a todos nuestros confinados en casa a principios de diciembre.

El Ministerio de Colchas de Oración (que es TODOS los miembros de San Marcos y todos los que asisten a nuestros servicios virtuales y reciben nuestro Boletín) ha envuelto a 150 destinatarios en colchas de oración y amor este año, y hemos atado oraciones adicionales en 5 colchas. También hemos atado las oraciones en 73 bolsillos de oración. Estos son aproximadamente 4 x 5 pulgadas, para caber en un bolsillo o bolso. Cada uno tiene una cruz de metal en el interior que dice “Dios te ama” y hay 5 “cadenas” de oraciones atadas para el destinatario. Estos se llevan fácilmente con usted. También hemos dado 9 cuadrados de oración bautismal, una colcha de oración bautismal para bebés y 1 cuadrado deoración. Llame a Roz Nelson al (422-5463) o a la oficina de la iglesia (427-5515) si desea solicitar una colcha o bolsillo de oración.
Las colchas de oración se colocan en la barandilla del altar para la bendición del pastor el domingo por la mañana. Luego son llevados al nártex y atados por la congregación cuando salen del santuario. Las imágenes de las colchas, los bolsillos de oración y los cuadrados de oración están en el Boletín cada semana con las oraciones que se piden. Somos un pequeño grupo que trabaja en nuestros hogares y daríamos la bienvenida a otros que deseen coser o poner lazos en nuestras colchas para que se unan a nosotros trabajando en sus hogares. Llame a Roz o hable con ella antes o después de los servicios si está interesado.

La Ciudad de Chula Vista otorgó a Project Hand/Lutheran Social Services junto con el Banco de Alimentos de San Diego un Certificado de Reconocimiento por su trabajo continuo para combatir el hambre en Chula Vista en tiempos de gran necesidad.
Aproximadamente 14.000 recibieron asistencia durante 2021. Muchos más recibieron los alimentos necesarios del Banco de Alimentos de San Diego, de una distribución masiva mensual en el campus de St. Mark’s. Este año se introdujo una nueva cara para esta distribución, ya que el caminar para obtener su despensa se cambió a un entorno de obtener su despensa en su automóvil (drive-thru). Esta idea fue presentada por St. Mark’s como una forma más segura y eficiente de servir a los necesitados. Esta nueva configuración ha sido ampliamente apreciada por todos.
Continuamos haciendo un viaje al Banco de Alimentos de San Diego en Miramar cada dos semanas o cuando sea necesario. Regresamos con 1500 a 2000 libras de alimentos, lo que mantiene los estantes en Project Hand abastecidos. Personalmente quiero agradecer a Jean y Fred Armer por su continua participación. Muchas veces me refiero a ellos como nuestros proveedores de productos. Otro agradecimiento es para Rodney Connors, quien sirvió como nuestro joven músculo, antes de regresar a la escuela en agosto pasado. Johnny mantiene Project Hand funcionando a diario, junto con sus ayudantes. Sobre todo, gracias de nuevo, no podríamos hacer esto sin ti.
Ha sido otro año ocupado para la propiedad de St. Mark’s.
Los electrodomésticos de la cocina fueron reparados o reemplazados, incluyendo el refrigerador, el congelador, la estufa, el triturador de basura y el lava platos, lo que nos dio una cocina completamente funcional nuevamente.
Las luces de salida interiores fueron reemplazadas por los requisitos del Departamento de Bomberos de Chula Vista.
Muchas luces exteriores fueron reparadas o recién instaladas, incluidas las luces del estacionamiento para una mayor seguridad.
El campus superior se pusieron cerraduras nuevas para aumentar la seguridad y la protección.
Las puertas del santuario fueron reparadas.
Se compraron nuevas mesas para Jacobson Hall.
El Ministerio español limpió y arrastró camiones cargados de maleza desde el frente de JacobsonHall, alrededor de la oficina de nivel inferior, cercade del Proyecto Mano, creando un campus más seguro y atractivo.
Limpió las raíces de los árboles de las líneas de alcantarillado y reemplazó 20 pies de tubería de arcilla.
Se instalaron nuevos barridos de puertas en todas las puertas exteriores para evitar criaturas y escombros soplados.
Se instaló un nuevo letrero digital brillante en la esquina de Hilltop e I St.
El sistema de calefacción (HVAC) fue reparado.
Se instaló una nueva caja fuerte.
Las ventanas de la sala de la escuela dominical de nivel inferior fueron reparadas.
La sala de jóvenes y la guardería se limpiaron y se prepararon para la ocupación.
Se compraron marquesinas y se instalaron en el patio para que pudiéramos seguir teniendo servicios al aire libre y muchos otros proyectos.
Con todo lo dicho, un proyecto importante que se realizará este año es el reemplazo de viejas tuberías de alcantarillado de arcilla que ahora están unidas a la raíz y los inodoros de respaldo.
Hay tantas personas involucradas en el trabajo de nuestra propiedad.

Addendum to the Minutes: Final Ballot (Reported in 2/6/21 Newsletter)
The online votes were tallied automatically and then, on Tuesday, February 2, the following counters met to tally the paper ballots: Manuel Alvarez, Sandra Aguilar, Sherri Coughlin, Ann Larsen, Noemi Sicard and Chuck Cole. Debbie Lechner and Tom Larsen assisted in validating all ballots by certifying member status and 2020 donation of record. 74 valid ballots were cast; 38 online and 36 on paper— a 50/50 split! All candidates were elected to their nominated positions with far more than a majority vote. The 2021 proposed budget was passed with significantly more than a 2/3 vote, and the governing documents (2021 Constitution and the Amendment to the Articles of Incorporation) were approved with close to a unanimous vote.

Church Council Annual Report 2021
COVID-19: Year 2, and yet…another amazing year at St. Mark’s that highlighted our capacity to share God’s love and forgiveness through our service to others–among our fellow members and friends, to those in need across our community and throughout the world via ELCA ministries—all from our corner at Hilltop and I Street. This year, we demonstrated more commitment than ever to our mission, and our belief that Christ is our Savior who calls us into service in His name.
2021 has been another eventful year . . . perhaps more eventful than any in the last 15 years!
With Pastor Karla’s new ministry at St. Mark’s, we have accomplished many things to improve the property, improve outreach to our members and friends, and extend our ministry into the community. Some of our important accomplishments are listed below (see Pastor Karla’s and the property reports for other accomplishments and additional details):
2021 was the first time St. Mark’s has had a 50/50 Council: 50% English and 50% Spanish-speaking members. This was a major step toward truly becoming One Congregation—Two Languages, which has been our vision since Pastor Alicia and her ministry joined St. Mark’s 10 years ago!
We celebrated St. Mark’s 67th Anniversary on Sunday, March 7.
We purchased a portable sound system and three carport shade canopies to ensure a smooth transition to in-person worship on the outdoor patio, following 54 weeks of remote-only worship.
We facilitated over two months (March 28 – June 13) of worship on the patio to ensure COVID safety protocols were followed and members could worship together in person.
Council began an Ask, Thank, Tell approach to stewardship, following the study of the book of the same title authored by Charles R. Lane.
We hosted 5 successful bilingual services, where members now sit in mixed pews, decreasing the sense of “us” and “them.”
We moved the 2nd service start time and Glory Lutheran’s worship space to the Lower Level, allowing us to begin a Christian Education Hour (and occasional breakfast) in Jacobson Hall where we have studied the meaning of Discipleship, shared Stories of Our Lives, and prepared donations for those in need.
We received a $5,000 Pacifica Synod Technology Development grant to offset the cost of the new sanctuary computer, wireless microphones, and equipment for live broadcasts.
We initiated a Congregational Thank You Dinner hosted by Council in appreciation of the many gifts of time, talent and treasure shared by our members and friends throughout the year.
Over $2,000 in $250 Thrivent Grants obtained by members provided multiple congregational breakfasts and dinners, as well as funded other community projects.
We purchased a new copier lease, saving St. Mark’s about $300 a month.
Back-lit wall sign installed on the south exterior wall of Jacobson Hall next to the cross was a donation from Alex Sanchez of ANS Signs.
Pastor Karla and Lutheran Social Services, with help from the San Diego Food Bank, reformatted Project Hand monthly food distribution to serve 300-400 cars/month in a drive-thru process. This change significantly increased food access, the number of families served and improved safety for workers, volunteers and community members.
Pastor Karla conducted the first new member class in over a decade.
We installed a new digital sign, retrofitting the 66-year-old wooden sign located on a concrete monument base at the corner of Hilltop and I Streets. This was funded by a Pacifica Synod Latino Ministry Endowment Fund Grant.
A team of dedicated volunteers ensured our kitchen is fully functional again!
We continued to refine our LIVE broadcasts of worship services every Sunday, and during additional evening or weekend events.
Pastor Karla was installed as our new settled pastor on her 1-year anniversary at St. Mark’s. Her installation was delayed due to COVID restrictions.
We raised $3,225 from our first annual Celebrating God’s Love: Brick by Brick campaign toward the purchase of a new retrofit (hopefully digital) sign for the large St. Mark’s sign on Hilltop Drive. We will run a second campaign in summer 2022. Council approved funds to purchase this main sign; bids are being reviewed and design is in progress.
Council approved a new 21st Century Employee Handbook, aka Personnel Policy, which covers all current issues in employment regulations and law.
We replaced the bulbs in both sanctuary projectors and installed a new TV monitor for the west side of the sanctuary.
Pianos and organ are back on a regular schedule of being tuned and voiced.
Installed a new safe near the sanctuary to improve security of Sunday morning offerings.
Pastor Karla renegotiated our tenant agreements for 2022 to include a 10% increase to cover increased utilities and employee expenses.
We installed 2 new office computers, making office work easier and faster.
In December, we identified another, more serious issue with the 65 year-old cast iron and clay sewer connections from the sanctuary building to the street, and we are acquiring bids for the project. A pine tree will need to be removed because the pipe passes directly below the tree.
As 2021 comes to a close, your Church Council thanks you from the bottom of our hearts for your dedication to supporting the growth of our mission; your generous donations of time, talent and treasure to further our work in Christ’s name and, most of all, your belief and trust in our leadership. We have worked diligently to maintain an unprecedented level of transparency about the work of the church behind the scenes and the decisions we are making on your behalf. We have been blessed to lead a church-on-the-move this year and we pray that God continues to bless St. Mark’s and each of you in the coming year.

What a wonderful year it has been with you, faithful gracious people of St Mark’s!
We have focused our attention on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. For we have only one authority at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church: A loving saving God, Jesus Christ our Lord.
God is doing great things at St. Mark’s and we have been privileged to have a front row seat!
Worship
We began the year with online only worship and a variety of drive through experiences, including La Posada, Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. We even had a visit from our Easter chipmunk!
Our first in-person gathering was Easter Sunday, which included a baptism. A line of baptisms followed, one or two each week! As with all things, creating the space and preparing the tech / sound/ etc. was a labor of love and required new specialized equipment and a lot of volunteer help.
Our first bi-lingual in-person worship was held on Pentecost Sunday. We have made a commitment to seasonal bi-lingual services. This year’s bi-lingual services included Good Friday, Pentecost, Reformation Sunday and our Children’s Christmas pageant. These are a labor of love and help us live out our vision of “Two languages, One Congregation”.
Following careful Covid-19 guidelines, we carefully moved back into the sanctuary on August 1 for our grand re-opening. Everyone was relieved and grateful to be back. In preparation for this Sunday, we wrote invitations and thank you notes to many who kept St Mark’s alive and viable over the years.
Christian Education Hour
After much discussion and input from members, we decided to emphasize our Christian Education hour. Our Second (Spanish) service graciously agreed to move their worship time to 11:15, allowing us 1 hour 15 minutes for fellowship and Christian Education (Adult Bible studies, Sunday School, Confirmation, and a variety of all-congregation events). We negotiated with Glory Lutheran to use Jacobson Hall on Sunday mornings as many of our members cannot easily walk to the lower level of the Sanctuary. Since August we have regularly had 80-100 people enjoy our fellowship and Christian education events. Pastor Alicia often leads a Bible study on Sunday mornings in Spanish in the Grey Room on the same topic as the Bible study in Jacobson Hall.
Melissa Hernandez Velasco continued Sunday school on-line, then moved to hybrid and finally in-person outdoor Sunday school. Confirmation for grades 5-9 began in August as well, led by my husband, James Jerpseth. We enjoyed an every-other-month all family event in August, October and December (Beach clean-up, pool party and Christmas lights event). Our Confirmation class has between 5-10 young people each Sunday, and our Sunday school averages 4 children. We have formed a Children and Youth Ministry team and now have a group of trained and background-checked volunteers. We are preparing to welcome many more children.
We have thoroughly enjoyed many events during our Christian Education time! Our grand re-opening, hearing Stories of our Lives from Billy Cox, Manual Alverez, Myrna Bolin, the celebration of 10 years of Pastor Alicia and Spanish ministry at St. Mark’s, celebration of First Communion, creating Blessing Bags for those who are hungry, Veterans Day and care packages for active military, Christmas cards for our homebound, as well as regular adult Bible studies.
Bible studies
We offer a regular Tuesday, 3 PM Bible study which looks at the upcoming Gospel. This is available on Zoom or in person on the lower level. Bible studies have also been offered on Sunday mornings with the specific emphasis on what it means to follow Jesus.
Staff/ Property
Pastor Alicia Saenz, Synodically Licensed Minister at St. Mark’s, is a joy to work with and the person I consider to be my pastor. The more I know Pastor Alicia, the more I trust and respect her. She preaches and lives her faith, communicates clearly with me and all leaders at St Mark’s, and is helping us to envision God’s vision for our future. We are extremely blessed to have her.
It is a joy to work with Jason Chase, our marvelous Director of Music. Not only did he mastermind the Nov 20 organ fundraiser concert, he also arranged our new liturgy based on the Chicago Folk Mass. We are extremely blessed to work with such a talented and grace-filled man.
Bobb Briggs has worked diligently as our Property Manager throughout Covid and into December before resigning due to increased family demands. In addition to regular set up and outdoor clean up duties, he oversaw re-keying the entire upper campus and portions of the sanctuary. We are now aware of everyone who has a key and for what purpose. He and Oscar Uribe vastly improved our outdoor lighting making St Mark’s much safer. With the help of Dick Bolin, Richard Roy, and Dave Gerber, the kitchen garbage disposal, freezer, oven and refrigerator are all in working order. And all of our outside facing doors now have sweeps to keep critters and debris from entering. Thank you, Bobb!
Margarita Alverez is our dedicated and loving custodian. She has kept us safe during Covid and continued the increasingly challenging job of keeping our campus clean and free of vermin. This has not been an easy task as our fellowship events have vastly increased. We are saddened she had to resign due to health reasons, but welcome her replacement, Maria Luisa Guzman, Margarita’s sister-in-law.
Sandra Aguilar, administrative assistant, and I began exactly the same week in October 2020. She jumped in immediately and took on all office tasks for both English and Spanish speaking services. As we became busier and added more congregational activities, Sandra rose to the task. Unfortunately, her other career as an airline flight attendant began to demand more of her time. She resigned her position in October. The personnel committee re-formed under the direction of council president Sheri Barker and we interviewed a group of highly qualified bilingual candidates. We unanimously agreed on Cindy Diaz. She began mid October 2021, and has delighted us with her skills, kindness and calming presence.
Melissa Hernandez Velasco is our wonderful Youth and Children’s Ministry leader. She celebrated both her wedding to Victor Velasco and the birth of their son, Isaac this year. What a joy to be a part of these celebrations! After her maternity leave, she is back working with us again. The personnel committee has asked Melissa to serve as our nursery attendant as well. Melissa is already known and trusted by parents, she will arrange for the volunteers, and she will help us keep up to date with all new families and children.
Our wonderful tech and AV help, Andrew Vargas and Nathan Estrada, work diligently with Sheri Barker and Deb Lechner to get the services miked, recorded, uploaded, and edited. What a job! We love working with these two young men. They are kind, talented, willing and a wonderful asset to this congregation.
Bells
We are so blessed to have Lisa and Bruce Mansfield as new members of this congregation. Lisa took on the brave task of leading our bell choir and now we joyfully ring each Wednesday evening.
Grants
We have taken advantage of every grant opportunity that comes our way, including grants for improved technology, Spanish speaking ministry, Global Engagement (not hard when some of our members live in Tijuana), Warner Grant for Children’s ministry, Matthew 25 Grant for serving those in need, and a long list of Thrivent Action Team Grants, each for $250, to pay for a variety of events, celebrations, outreach opportunities and service projects. Glory Chinese Lutheran Church and Areundaum Korean Church
We enjoy healthy respectful relationships with both Glory and Areundaum churches. Glory Lutheran opted to worship on the lower level of the sanctuary and purchased chairs for this purpose. Now all four languages worship God under the same roof each Sunday. Aruendaum resumed their Korean language classes for children on Saturday mornings and Glory began an exercise group on Fridays. We work hard to maintain regular communication and are pleased with the results.
Lutheran Social Services
We enjoy a healthy respectful relationship with both LSS SC Project Hand and Upward Bound/ Talent Search. We partner with them whenever possible. This year brought a big change to Project Hand as they transitioned from a walk up monthly food distribution to a drive through. This was necessary due to the pandemic, social distancing and other covid precautions. With the help of their new director, Mark Kuntz, the San Diego Food Bank, and generous donations from this congregation, Project Hand was able to secure all the necessary equipment for a safe drive through. This food distribution is one of the largest in the county. You help to make this happen and to feed hundreds of people every month. Thank you.
LSS SC Upward Bound/ Talent Search programs help over 600 low income, first generation students get through high school, into post-secondary education and graduate from post-secondary education. Stop by and talk with Gaby or Danny (or our own Mari Lizarraga) to find out more!
So many wonderful milestones have taken place this past year. We celebrate our life in faith together.
Membership
After culling through our member list and following the constitutional requirements for membership, we estimate our current membership to be 189 people. This includes children of active members as well as homebound members who may not be able to come in person due to the pandemic nor worship on line due to technology limitations, but consider themselves members of St. Mark’s. This number is not perfect, but as accurate as possible.

Keep your eyes open for opportunities to serve through building and grounds, Vacation Bible School, leading Bible studies, assisting with the quilting ministries, and whatever new thing God gives us to do. Our God is very capable of leading us.
So we will continue to celebrate God’s love and forgiveness, and in doing so, happily and without fear, serve others.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I must start with thanking God for all of you, for all the blessings that the Lord has bestowed in us and in our church community during 2021.
2021 was a time like no other in our lives. COVID-19 continues to produce uncertainty and stress to our family, friends, and the community we are called to serve. By now, we have all been impacted by this pandemic, which has been overwhelming for so many. My prayers and support are with you.
I am grateful to God for sending Pastor Karla to St. Mark’s. We are blessed to have her, it is a blessing to work alongside her in the Ministry of St. Mark’s, intentionally getting it to be more and more one congregation in two languages. Thank you all for working alongside us building for the Kingdom of God. Thanks to all of you for serving and caring for our church, for each other, for those in need and for the Chula Vista Community during 2021. During these hard times of the Pandemic, you faithfully continued with your offerings, you contributed with donations, you contributed with your talents in a way that is outstanding, in a way that makes me see the Holy Spirit working in our midst, for only God would be able to move your hearts and inspire you to do the work that is needed in order to accomplish the goals that God has for us in getting his message of salvation to all, putting others before yourselves.
As you all know, we celebrated together the 10th anniversary of St. Mark’s as One congregation in two languages and I thank the confirmation class kids, parents, James and Luz for the wonderful celebration given in my honor for these 10 years. I thank you all for the gifts, the beautiful cards and poems you wrote for me. As I said before, if we are to congratulate anyone, it would be you, the members of St. Mark’s that have to be congratulated for being willing to open your doors and share your beautiful church with the Spanish Speakers. We knocked on your door and you not only opened your door, but also opened your hearts to us and received us as members of your congregation. There are no words to express my gratitude; it is an overwhelming joy to be part of St. Mark’s. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I want to thank you all for all your prayers, all Christian churches are to pray, but I have happily noticed more and more that St. Mark’s is a praying congregation. We have an email prayer chain, thanks so much to Ruby; she is such a blessing coordinating the prayer chain. We have the prayer quilt ministry that touches hearts everywhere. I have a text prayer chain for the second service members. We pray in our Bible studies; we pray in our meetings; we pray when we get together. God is listening and answering our prayers according to his will, giving us strength, endurance, determination and love for all.
Special thanks to James Jerpseth who is leading our Youth Group with their confirmation classes. Yes, we have a youth group and we thank God for the way he is working in the present and building the future of St Marks.
It has been an incredible year and I am indeed grateful for how passionate and selfless you have been. We are grateful to God for this year, and I look forward to another amazing blessed new year. In 2022, we will continue with our Ministries and our Mission helping in any way we can. We have big challenges ahead of us, but we will face them one day at a time. I know we can because God is with us, he has demonstrated His faithfulness to us!

Goals:
Following the Instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Commandment of the Great commission and bringing the good news of justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ to the community of Chula Vista.
Increase the number of people who attend the Spanish Worship Services at St. Mark’s Church
Continue with our Bible study every other week and during Christian education on Sundays.
Recruitment of volunteers within the congregation for different activities and committees of the church.
2021 Achievements:
Successful transition from Live stream transmission to in-person Worship Services and Live stream transmission
The Worship Service in Spanish has maintained an in-person attendance and audience for the Stream Live transmission every Sunday.
Attended special meetings and community events.
Helped with organization and the our Drive-thru communion events
Helped with organization, shopping, planning, decorating, cooking and cleaning for multiple events we celebrated together during 2021.

Regular Activities
Projects of cutting bushes in our parking lot by the entrance on I St. were completed in order to increase cleanliness and better appearance of our church.
There is a potluck on the second Sunday of the month after the Worship Service in Spanish (As permitted by Pandemic prevention guidelines). This meal has the purpose that current members invite family and friends to come just as guests so that they know our church, our congregation, our Christian denomination. We hope that if they come as guests, without any pressure that they might like our church and come back.
The Second service members of our congregation have worked very hard talking about our church to people around Chula Vista and its surroundings, as well as inviting friends and family. We will continue with these efforts during 2022.
One member of the Second Service is actively serving in the Church Council and another one will join for 2022.
Challenges:
Most of the members of the Spanish Ministry work two jobs or don’t have the privilege of having weekends off. For this reason they are not able to participate in the monthly cleaning and other activities of our church. I try to organize them well in advance so that they can ask for time off, if possible, on a Saturday for us to complete a project like cutting unwanted bushes and they also donate their time and their gifts as much as they possibly can.
The biggest challenge at this time is the Pandemic as it prevents us from having activities with the community of Chula Vista.
Next steps:
We have activities planned for outreach events to increase awareness and connections of St. Marks with the local community, like a drive thru ashes event for Ash Wednesday and possibly an event for Easter.
Continue with efforts to show people the way to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, for the Glory of God.

Annual Audit Report
With this report, the Audit Committee presents the results of its audit for the period beginning January 1, 2020 and ending December 31, 2020 financial books and records of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chula Vista, California, to the Congregational Council.
The audit was performed on Saturday, October 23, 2021 by a committee consisting of the following members: Tom Larsen and Laura Ortiz. Diane Flint-Wages audited the Legacy Endowment Funds.
In the examination of receipts and disbursements, no material discrepancies were discovered, however, the committee did make note of the following items:
The following changes/events occurred during this audit period:
An outside Bookkeeper was hired Mid-August 2020.
Due to Covid-19 Pandemic, in person gatherings stopped during the period of Mid-March 2020 to April 2021.
Assets:
Bank Accounts:
Cash Balances total $286,872.01 at December 31,2020
Receipts are properly safeguarded, deposited in a time manner, and properly classified in the financial statements.
Donations of the congregation have been used and recorded as stipulated by the donors.
Cash/Checks were not maintained and counted in double custody due to the COVID-19 pandemic during the periods of April thru December 2021. (Note: Double custody procedures returned in April 2021.)
Recommendations: NONE
Disbursements:
Scope of the audit consists of reviewing a sampling of payments made during the fiscal year 2020. The payments were checked for appropriateness, Request for Check documents, and backup including receipts, invoices, or other documentation.
Payments were reviewed and all appeared appropriate.
Recommendations: Found many “Request for Check” not signed during Pastor Dan’s time, but all were signed since Pastor Karla’s arrived.
Payroll:
Review of time sheets was performed:
Findings:
Time sheets are not signed by employees.
Time sheets were not always signed by Pastor prior to Pastor Karla’s arrival.
Recommendation:
Establish a policy regarding Time Sheets requiring employees and Supervisor/Pastor to review and sign timesheets.
Insurance Policies:
Not reviewed for this audit period.
Memorial Endowment Fund (Audited by Diane Flint-Wages): Scope of the audit included the review of the financial activity of the Memorial Endowment in 2020 including:
Confirmation of the December 31, 2020 Fund Balance of $141,131.
Finding:
The Legacy Committee does not always receive the quarterly Thrivent Account Statements that are mailed to the church office. Recent procedures have been implemented to correct this oversight.
Confirmation of Distributions for the period totaling $5,183. Approval of all distributions were noted in the Legacy Committee meeting minutes.
Committee records were complete, with the exception of Thrivent Account Statements noted above, and found to be in good order.
Based on the audit work performed, the Audit Committee found no significant, material departure from best practices of church accounting. Testing performed also found, with some exceptions as noted in this report, that controls governing the financial operations appear to be reasonable considering all factors, including the size of the congregation and its budget.

Altar Committee Annual Report for 2021
The altar committee is again very thankful to have served the staff and congregation this past year. We meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 10am to plan for the month.
Each week we prepare the altar area. Paraments are put on the altar according to the church calendar. Communion is set up for both services as well as various cleaning duties.
We welcome anyone who would like to join us.
Please continue to pray for our church and its leaders as we move in this new year, 2022.

Angel Tree Annual Report2021
The Angel Tree program was successful once again in 2021. Meredith McCall, with the guidance and great teamwork of Dorothy Geier, coordinated the Angel Tree program this year. St. Mark’s makes it such a huge success with their caring and prayerful hearts for these at-risk children, their incarcerated parent, and their caregiver(s). This year we served 20 children. Each child/family received:
2 gifts (a toy and a clothing gift)
Family bag which included:
Age-appropriate booklets/literature for each child
Angel Tree certificate for a free Bible
Hug-a-bears for each child made by Margaret Gailliard
A letter of invitation from Pastor Karla to St. Mark’s
This could not be possible without the St. Mark’s congregation. Thank you all for praying, for buying gifts, for donating, and for delivering gifts to the families. We were able to help provide joy to these families. “Celebrating God’s love and forgiveness, we serve others”.

Communications and Marketing Report2021
Facebook Group – Our private Facebook Group has gone from 312 members to 371 members this year. We use the page to share important announcements, photos of events and the weekly worship services. Thank you for commenting, liking and sharing fellowship on our private group page! It builds a real sense of online community.
YouTube and the Website – All our services are uploaded to YouTube and then using that link are shared on our website, reaching members of the congregation who aren’t on Facebook or part of the Facebook group. If you watch the service from YouTube, you can turn on closed captions which help if you’re having trouble hearing the service.
Online Worship – The Facebook views of our Sunday services online went from an average of 87 views in the first quarter of 2021, to 55 when we started having outdoor services at church starting with our Easter service, to 32 after we moved into the sanctuary. We are still serving enough people online that it seems important to offer that option. If you’re travelling, or homebound or recovering from illness or if you live out of the area it’s nice to know you can still watch a service at home at any time or go back to hear a sermon a second time or listen to a favorite hymn again.
Cox Internet – We have had continuing issues with our cable connection and stable internet since we started our online broadcasts. It finally got so bad in December that we shifted away from offering a live broadcast to a recorded service. The benefits are that the recording is error free and a pleasure to watch. However, we’re disappointed to lose the online community that has grown up around the broadcasts and we’ll see if we continue to serve the same number of people with the recording. We plan to reevaluate it at the end of January and ask for feedback from the congregation.
Our Email Newsletters – We’ve continued to offer weekly email newsletters even though we’re back in church again. We have steady readership each week and it seems like a good tool for keeping the congregation informed. The newsletters share prayers and prayer quilts, share information about events scheduled at St. Mark’s, angel tree, monthly gardening, men’s breakfast and bible study, and for hearing from the Visioning Committee, Legacy Committee, Council and Pastors. We’ve also been able to get contact information updated, take votes and surveys and to share music, pictures and fun! We welcome submissions from anyone. It’s really been a great way to stay connected as a congregation!
Dedicated Audience –We have increased our newsletter readership to 223. About 130 of those readers open almost every email from St. Mark’s, another 25 open more than half of the newsletters. The feedback we get is very positive. Thank you to all the people who send in submissions every week, especially Pastor Karla, Sheri Barker, Roz Nelson, Diane Wages and Cindy Diaz in the office. Thank you to Bob Lechner, Sheri Barker and James Jerpseth for sending newsworthy photos!
Printed Newsletters – Last year we began to send out a printed copy of the news once a month to anyone who didn’t have email or who requested to receive the news by mail. We’ve tried to pack a lot into the printed version and to make them meaningful.
Spanish Newsletters – We also send out a Spanish translation of the newsletter by mail to the Hispanic Ministry members once a month. Many thanks to Andrea, Gabby and Cindy for doing the translations in 2021 and to Cindy who copies and mails them! Cindy will take over doing the translation in 2022.
Contact Information – This year we are updating the church database software, called Servant Keeper, which was last updated over 10 years ago. We hope to have a church wide push to update contact information. We’ve added emergency contact information to the database and that has provided a nice safety net for members who live alone on several occasions this year.
Our Website – is at stmarkschulavista.org The website continues to be a great place to read council minutes and watch a worship service or see the annual report. Most importantly, it’s how our neighbors find out about our church and what we offer. But there are definitely pages that need to be deleted and updated. Pastor Karla and I will tackle that some time in the new year.
Online Presence – St. Mark’s has a LinkedIn and we also have a public “information” page for the church on Facebook. The website, YouTube, google maps, yelp, listing in Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce, SD Reader online, YellowPages.com, church.org, churchfinder.com and faithstreet.com continue to help with our outreach. These websites come up in search when you look for St. Mark’s Chula Vista.All of them (except the website) are free listings, no cost to St. Mark’s.
Marketing – Research shows that millennials with their young families shop for a church online and it’s important to look like the church that we want to be and to be in the places they’re looking. However, word of mouth is the best marketing! Thank you for sharing your love of St. Mark’s and inviting friends and neighbors to join you for worship and events here.

The Distribution Policy, per the bylaws is as follows:
The Committee is limited to an annual distribution of 4% of the Fund balance, defined by the account balance as of December 31 of the previous year, which includes all interest, dividends, realized/unrealized capital gains from the previous year. Any distribution that is larger, may be approved by Congregation Council.
There is a mandatory distribution required of the fund of 4% to fund ministry.
A grant application will be available for requests. Recipients will be determined by the Legacy Committee.
The Committee is not limited in its use of the distribution for ministry to its congregation. The Committee may share up to 25% of the distribution with the following recipients: our synod, ELCA Churchwide ministries, ELCA-related ministries, or all other non-Lutheran charities within the San Diego area.
The distribution shall not be used for operating budget nor for capital expenditures of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
2021 approved Budget was $5,645.00, which was distributed as follows:
$2000 for Pastor’s Discretionary Fund; balance=$3645
$950 for St. Mark’s Youth Summer Camp; balance=$2695
$1000 for St. Mark’s Council Event; balance=$1695
$500 for St. Mark’s Congregational Dinner; balance=$1195
$1195 for St. Mark’s Youth (VBS); balance=$0

Member Care Ministry Report2021
It continues to be obvious that St. Mark’s is very caring and friendly. Before we started meeting in person for Sunday worship, we had about nine callers who had specific members to contact on a regular basis to make sure their needs were being met and they were ok. New friendships even evolved. When we started worshipping outside and eventually in the Sanctuary, we’d see and visit with other members there. Then our ministry focused more on the homebound and those who found it safer to worship from home.
The Member Care team has been meeting monthly: first by zoom in March, then outside by Jacobson Hall, and then in June we moved to the Lower Level.
At our meetings:
We open with devotions and prayer,
We lovingly share our contact information for the month to make sure no home-bound or person in need (death in family or illness or ??) has been left out. We stress confidentiality.
We discuss ways to support our contacts and also support each other. We stress the need for an EMERGENCY CONTACT PERSON for everyone. For example, if you go to the hospital or move and don’t notify anyone, we can’t find you and WE CARE!! Please call the church office (619-427-5515) if you haven’t already provided your Emergency Contact Person.
With Pastor Karla’s training and guidance, we’ve also visited and taken communion to the homebound who desire it.
We discuss ways to support our congregation: wear name tags; send hand-written cards for Grand Reopening and cards of thanks; first all-congregation service project — bags of food & Bible & hand-written note to hand out; Story of our lives by members; Veterans Day celebration; prior to All-Saints Sunday invite families of those honored; with the help of Sunday School & Confirmation kids, we sent handmade Christmas cards to all of our homebound early December.
We end with a closing prayer!
If you would like to join the Member Care Team or if you have a need or suggestion that hasn’t been addressed, please call Dorothy Geier (619-479-9975) or Pastor Karla (619-427-5515). We’d also like to include the homebound on this team. Even if someone is homebound themselves, they can call, send cards, and pray for others in need—perhaps a friend or we can assign someone. Think about it! It’s also up to all of us to be aware if someone hasn’t been in church or you know they’re ill or in the hospital. Thank you for being so caring and for praying for others.

Prayer Quilt Ministry 2021
The Prayer Quilt Ministry (which is ALL the members of St. Mark’s and all of those attending our virtual services and receiving our Newsletter) has wrapped 150 recipients in prayer quilts and love this year, and we have tied additional prayers into 5 quilts. We have also tied prayers into 73 prayer pockets. These are about 4 x 5 inches – to fit in a pocket or purse. Each has a metal cross inside that says “God loves you” and there are 5 “chains” of prayers tied for the recipient. These are easily carried with you. We have also given 9 baptismal prayer squares, a baby baptismal prayer quilt and 1 prayer square. Please call Roz Nelson as (422-5463) or the church office (427-5515) if you would like to request a prayer quilt or pocket.
Prayer quilts are placed on the altar rail for the Pastor’s blessing on Sunday morning. They are then taken to the narthex and tied by the congregation as they leave the sanctuary. Pictures of the quilts, prayer pockets, and prayer squares are in the Newsletter each week with the prayers being asked for. We ask for your virtual ties and prayers if you are in the congregation at home or are visiting our website.
We are a small group working in our homes and would welcome others who would like to sew or put ties into our quilts to join us working in their homes. Call Roz or talk to her before or after services if you are interested.
We are thankful for your love, your prayers, and your donations of time, materials, and money. Donations need to be designated to the PRAYER Quilt Ministry. If writing a check, it should be made out to St. Mark’s and designated to the Prayer Quilt Ministry.

Project Hand 2021
Thank you to the members of St Mark’s for their continued support of Project Hand.
The City of Chula Vista awarded Project Hand/Lutheran Social Services along with the San Diego Food Bank a Certificate of Recognition for their continued work to combat hunger in Chula Vista during times of great need.
Approximately 14,000 received assistance during 2021. Many more received needed food from the San Diego Food Bank, from a monthly mass distribution on the campus of St. Mark’s. This year a new face for this distribution was introduced, as the walk up was changed to a drive-thru setting. This idea was presented by St. Mark’s as a safer and more efficient way to serve those in need. This new setting has been widely appreciated by all.
We continue to make a trip to the San Diego Food Bank in Miramar every two weeks or when needed. We return with 1500 to 2000 pounds of food, which keeps the shelves at Project Hand stocked. I personally want to thank Jean and Fred Armer for their continued participation. I many times refer to them as our produce suppliers. Another thanks goes to Rodney Connors, who served as our young muscle, prior to returning to school last August. Johnny keeps Project Hand running on a daily basis, along with his helpers. Most of all, thank you again, we couldn’t do this without you.

Property Report2021
It’s been another busy year for St Mark’s property.
The kitchen appliances were repaired or replaced, including the refrigerator, freezer, stove, garbage disposal, and dishwasher, giving us a fully functional kitchen again.
Interior EXIT lights were replaced per requirements of the Chula Vista Fire Department.
Many exterior lights were repaired or newly installed, including the parking lot lights for increased safety.
The upper campus was re-keyed to increase safety and security.
Sanctuary doors were repaired.
New tables were purchased for Jacobson Hall.
Spanish Ministry cleared out and hauled away truckloads of brush from the front of Jacobson Hall, around the lower-level office, and near Project Hand creating a safer and more attractive campus.
Cleared out tree roots from sewer lines and replaced 20 feet of clay pipe.
New door sweeps were installed on all exterior doors to prevent critters and blown debris..
A bright new digital sign was installed on the corner of Hilltop and I St.
The heater system (HVAC) was repaired.
A new safe was installed.
The lower-level Sunday school room windows were repaired.
The Youth room and nursery were cleaned out and made ready for occupancy.
Canopies were purchased and installed in the patio so we could continue to have outdoor services
and many other projects.
With all that said – A Major Project to be done this year is the replacement of old clay sewer pipes which are now root bound and backing up toilets.
There are so many people involved in the work of our property.
Thank you Bobb Briggs for 3 ½ years of service to St Mark’s. So many important projects were completed during your time as property chair.
